 KENTUCKY HORSE PARK

MUSTANG TROOP

The Kentucky Horse Park Mustang Troop teams youngsters chosen by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Division of Police, Police Activities League (PAL) with wild horses adopted through the Bureau of Land Management's Adopt-A-Horse Program. In 1994, the Bureau of Land Management presented the first twelve wild horses to the Horse Park for use in the program. The Park now has twenty-four matched bay Mustangs all gathered from public range lands in Wyoming.

The young Mustang Troopers and the horses work and train together under the supervision of the Horse Park's Education Department staff. Initially the boys and girls, ranging in age from nine to fourteen years, learn basic horse care and handling skills. As their training progresses, they begin to learn the riding skills necessary to join the Mustang Troop Precision Mounted Drill Team. During the summer of 1996 the Drill Team made their national debut performance at Equitana, USA. On January 20, 1997 the Kentucky Horse Park Mustang Troop Drill Team proudly rode their horses down Pennsylvania Avenue in the Presidential Inaugural Parade. They received a well deserved thumbs-up from President Clinton as they passed the reviewing stand.

The combined support from the local community, city, state, and federal governments has enabled the program to reach its goals. Their attachment to their horses has encouraged the Troopers to develop positive attitudes, discipline, and pride. The Troopers have worked hard at the Horse Park, at home and in school. They now bring us their report cards to show off their improved grades at school.
